MALP Training Opportunities

MALP is expanding the workforce education programs. We’ve brought back classes on Basic Landscape Math, Landscape Plan Reading, Irrigation 101 and First Aid/CPR. These classes were filled quickly and held at ISI Hawaii, Inc, who generously provided their classroom space.

We had more diversity of organizations in this class than in any of our other programs. Dave Burnett, of SGS Hawaii, a local landscape contractor, required all of their supervisors to attend as a way of increasing their knowledge on irrigation.

Our Training classes are very popular! If you are interested in joining us please register as soon as they are announced to be sure there is room for you to attend.

Below is the list of classes we intend to repeat. We are VERY interested in developing training that you require to advance your position and for your safety at work so please suggest classes for the future which you would like for us to provide.

Math is Beautiful!!!

There are 2 “math” classes that go hand in hand. These will range from basic understanding of landscape math such as how to determine how much fertilizer you need to more complicated programs to help you learn to create orders and estimates for your existing projects, or for potential bids. This is valuable practical knowledge! We strongly suggest you sign up for both.

Basic Landscape Math

    • Don’t be afraid of math! It’s easy once you know how – and have cheat sheets! Learn to calculate quantities of fertilizer for your property, determine quantities of soils, compost, and more!
  • Teacher: Allison Wright, Island Plant Company, LLC

Understanding Landscape Plans & Calculations

  • Learn how to read landscape planting plans, determine and plant spacing & quantities using everyday calculations
  • Teacher: Bill Mitchell, Hawaii Land Design

Irrigation 101 – Understanding Basic Components & Troubleshooting Repairs

Irrigation 101 is the start of a series of upcoming irrigation classes to help you learn everything from basic to advanced irrigation techniques.

  • Learn the different types of materials available, how to choose the right components, & learn the how to do basic repairs of lateral lines & valves
  • Teacher: Gary Thompson, Clean & Green Landscape

First Aid/Cpr/Aed Training – 2 Year Certification

First-response situations often call for both quick thinking and instantaneous mastery of CPR, First-Aid, *AEDs and the skills associated with them. You never know when an emergency situation may strike, and so the only defense is proper preparation.

This knowledge is vital to members of our industry. It is a program that was requested by several of our members.

*An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating.
